Napp's product Targinact® is one of six medicines shortlisted for the United Kingdom Prix Galien medal for innovation for 2010. Often billed as the ‘Nobel Prize for drug discovery’, the Prix Galien is the highest accolade for pharmaceutical research and development and recognises the technical, scientific and clinical research skills necessary to develop innovative medicine.
In choosing the UK finalists, the judging panel of renowned medical professionals, headed by Professor Sir Michael Rawlins, Chairman of the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE), were looking for products they felt offered the most significant overall contribution to patient care in the UK in terms of efficacy, safety, benefits and innovation.
Launched in January 2009, Targinact is Napp’s newest pain management treatment. It is the first analgesic licensed for use in the UK which combines an opioid agonist (oxycodone) with an opioid antagonist (naloxone). The combination of the oxycodone and naloxone aims to provide pain relief while counteracting some of the gastrointestinal side-effects commonly associated with opioid therapy.
Winners of the 2010 UK Prix Galien will be announced at a ceremony in the House of Lords on 13th October. First created in France in 1969, the Prix Galien has now been adopted in most of Europe, USA and Canada. Winners from every country are put forward for the International Prix Galien which is awarded every two years. More detail on the UK Prix Galien shortlist is available on the Latest News section of the awards website.

Last week Napp hosted its 4th Annual Science Week for local school children. A total of 157 Year 6 pupils (10-11 year-olds) from five Cambridgeshire primary schools visited the company to take part in a 'Making Medicines Day' run by its dedicated team of Science Ambassadors. During their day's visit each child completed an exciting programme that included a tour of Napp's production facility, a 'mini production process' activity and a medical-themed activity.
The Napp Ambassadors have received some great feedback from both children and teachers who attended the week and these comments inform and develop the ongoing programme of fun science activities they run for young people throughout the year. Since the start of 2010, activities undertaken by Napp's Ambassadors have reached over 2,000 youngsters aged between 4 and 18.

Napp has risen to position 5 in the Sunday Times Top 100 Companies to Work for 2010 and remains the highest ranked pharmaceutical company in the UK. This success comes only weeks after the company became only one of 50 in the UK to be awarded 3-star status by Best Companies through their accreditation scheme. Both the Sunday Times Top 100 and the Best Companies accreditation scheme recognise excellence in employee engagement and both are derived from the results of the Best Companies survey. Napp scored highly in all areas assessed by the survey, particularly in the 'my company', 'my team', 'fair deal' and 'leadership' sections.
This is the fourth time that Napp has entered the awards, but despite competition becoming tougher each time, with 347 organisations applying for inclusion in the mid-sized companies list for 2010, Napp has remained consistently successful. Number 5 is Napp's highest ranking to date having appeared 9th, 12th and 11th, respectively, over the previous 3 years.
Antony Mattessich, MD, said, "An engaged and motivated workforce that is willing to give their very best for their company is a good thing for any organisation, but is particularly advantageous for a pharmaceutical company because the marketplace is becoming increasingly complex and competitive. We believe that our strong commitment to fully engaging employees is key to our ongoing prosperity in such an environment. Napp is an exciting place to be, full of energised, successful people who take personal responsibility for our success. Our open culture truly gives them the freedom to generate ideas and challenge existing strategies and tactics to give the best possible outcomes for us, the NHS and patients."

Napp has provided sponsorship for the ARMA Charter for Work, which launches in England today. ARMA (The Arthritis and Musculoskeletal Alliance), the umbrella body providing a collective voice for the arthritis and musculoskeletal community in the UK, is calling for positive action to ensure people with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are properly supported to access employment and remain in their jobs.
The ARMA Charter for Work calls on policymakers, employers and healthcare professionals to make a commitment to decrease the number of people who fall out of the workplace as a result of ill health. The Charter contains a set of cohesive actions developed in partnership with NHS Employers, The Royal College of Nursing and The Work Foundation.

Napp has been awarded 'extraordinary' 3-star status in the Best Companies 2010 award scheme for the fourth year running and is one of only 50 companies to achieve the coveted three stars this year.
The Best Companies accreditation process is based on staff feedback; it looks at employee engagement as an integral part of a company's success and growth, and sets a benchmark for other employers. The accreditation scheme follows a Michelin star style system with companies awarded one star for first class, two stars for outstanding and three stars for extraordinary performance.
A record 1,086 organisations entered the Best Companies process this year; 773 were accredited and of these 410 were awarded star status.

Napp hosted its annual Awards in Chronic Pain at Downing College in Cambridge for the fourth year running. These awards recognise individuals, organisations and initiatives that have contributed to improving patient care and the management of pain. Entries are judged by a group of experts in pain management and prizes are awarded for the top three.
This year, first place, and a grant of £10,000, was awarded to Pain Concern, a charity based in Tranet, East Lothian, who are developing regular radio programmes to be broadcast over the internet, aimed at chronic pain sufferers, to enable them to share experiences and discuss relevant issues.
Pain Concern founder Heather Wallace commented, "The best thing about receiving this award is that the project has been recognised as a worthwhile venture. We are delighted we now have the potential to reach those with persistent pain through the radio waves."
